Listening Post – Citizen journalism – 01 August 08 Part 1
This week, we have put together a special broadcast focusing on what’s possibly one of the most debated news trends and one of the most well-known, citizen journalism. Critics call it journalism on the cheap, unskilled hacks putting out stories that are heavy on opinion and light on fact. According to those championing amateur reporters, it is a way to keep mainstream media honest and in some cases, it’s just about the only way to get a story out.

For over a year now …
For over a year now, I have relied upon the internet for news. It may well be unedited, but 4 me that is an advantage. U r presented with raw opinion from real people.
Sure some is whacky, but most is sincere.
I would go further, the internet has become a very significant force when it comes 2 government corruption & deceipt. This has led 2 the emergence of an awakening accross the globe with many more people taking responsibility & speaking out. Is this why the internet is now under threat.

That’s a false …
That’s a false dichotomy – good journalism and citizen journalism. Certainly there is citizen journalism and corporate or nonprofit, but mainstream journalism has a lot of inherent and case specific flaws.
In any case really good story. I watched the whole thing, very relevant and well done. Thanks.

The fact is that …
The fact is that The Cable companies and older americans who see Aljazeera just see sound bits and those are scare tactics, ment to worry us, Aljazeera English BBC World Sky news and any Public broadcast channel from Europe or Australlia is way better then USA media, Our media wants to isolate us from the world around us, maybe thats why I go crazy when I see International TV in the rest of the world, People are more better educated that way, and close down every cable channel and carry AJE yes!

Yes, Al Jazeera …
Yes, Al Jazeera took corporate news media to a whole different level. The quality of reporting flies in the face of all 30 second sound bite news from most networks. Much of it almost borders on academic. However, I hope that the organisatio stays close to its original mandate and doesn’t grow too big for its boots. It already is branching out into more channels: documentary, sport and suchlike. Anyway, at the moment it has an extremely positive contribution!

LAUGHABLE!
This …
LAUGHABLE!
This issue is one of access. It is NOT one of who is a “Journalist”…
The world is getting smaller and it’s getting much more open. Some may doubt that & insist that there exist lies and misinterpretations. But this is perception. Why is the fighting in Gaza between Hamas & Fata covered by the BBC and not here on Al Jazeera today? (August 2)
Filtering exists even where we would like to believe it does not. And filtering the news is the same as a lie by omission.

Eagle, you are so …
Eagle, you are so right. I used to watch the BBC in Europe, which had good coverage. Once I got to the U.S., I found BBC America to be completely different, and in my opinion, not worth watching at all.

Well done to these …
Well done to these journalists for reporting that which mainstread media refuses to report due to their political allegiance. These people put their lives at risk daily in Iraq, where the coalition kills journalists who report what they don’t want them to, and other countries where those who fall out of line are dealt with immediately. True heroes of journalism. The power these amateurs have is something mainstream media fear because they very often show how much the large outlets lie.

My friend told me …
My friend told me about AlJazeera and I’ve never looked back.
The MSM in the USA is the worst. Journalism is dead in America.
Message boards and internet media is where the truth is.
TV is USA is now completely irrelevant.

How about Online …
How about Online majority Media being ignored by Main Stream Media? Just search Obama, McCain and Ron Paul, then decide who deserves News Coverage.
Great piece Aljazeera!
