How would taking mass communication in college help you become a news presenter for like entertainment shows?

Posted on July 24th, 2010 by admin in mass communication | 1 Comment »

I heard if you take mass communication you can be like a tv anchor or like something like Ryan Seacreast. How would that course help you?

I think mass communication teaches more about media types – so it could give you an overview to the entertainment industry (and print media- magazines, newspapers, etc). The hosts/personalities/voice-over artists that I have worked with come from different backgrounds. A lot of them have backgrounds as actors and singers (experience you can even get in high school or college). That gives you experience in stage presence and diction. You could take classes in radio production or film studies – it helps to understand how the process works. I know one tv host who started by commentating college sports events, and just worked his way up through his own college into a professional job.

If you’re interested as a career, you might even be able to find an internship at a local tv network just to find out if you like it.

What is a Journalism and Mass Communication Intro course like?

Posted on July 21st, 2010 by admin in mass communication | 1 Comment »

I’m a college student working on my schedule for the fall and was wondering what a Journalism and Mass Communication Intro course entails? Has anyone taken it? What was it like? What did you do? I need it for degree requirements. It’s this or Speech, which I rather not do. Thank you. : < ]

Introduction to Journalism and Mass Communication is probably a survey course. Intro courses/survey courses are usually difficult because they tend to cover a lot of information, and usually information that is new to you.

I have taken a similar course. We looked at the media from a historical perspective, communication theory, and the social functions and effects of the communication industry in the US.

No, this is not a speech class so don’t worry, however, if this is a limited-enrollment course, you may be required to do a presentation.

Also, you may want to look at ratemyprofessors.com to get an idea as to what may be required in the course and how the professor who is teaching it, teaches it.

Good luck!

Southern Illinois Uni at Carbondale or Texas Tech Uni for MA in mass communication?

Posted on July 18th, 2010 by admin in mass communication | 2 Comments »

Hi I am an asian student. Been accepted for the MA in mass communication for Fall 2009 semester in the both universities with GA offer. I am very confused which I should chose. I want to obtain a PhD afterward and become a university faculty/social scientist/researcher. Please advice.

I know that SIUC has an excellent Communications department. Furthermore, southern Illinois is an excellent place to live if you like a small town environment with friendly people. If you are interested in outdoor activities the opportunities are fantastic. As a former student, faculty member, and scientist (40+ years) I believe I can speak with some authority. Although retired, I continue to live in Carbondale and have no plans to leave. Summers are hot but winters are mild and the spring and fall are beautiful. I should also mention that there is a large Asian student population here.

I’m sure Texas Tech is a fine University but I cannot comment on its communication program or location.

Are jobs in mass communication hard to find?

Posted on July 15th, 2010 by admin in mass communication | 2 Comments »

My cousin’s friend went through 4 years of college and got a degree in mass communication but ended up jobless. He says that its practically impossible to get a job in mass communications and went back to college to study something else.

I’m thinking of studying print journalism when I get older but is it really that hard to find a job?
What about working with like layouts in a magazine?

I would say it’s hard to find a job in that. I graduated with a double major with that as well as television. I got a job at a local news station where I was hired in as Production Assistant in Programing. My job in a nut shell was public relations for anything that was not the news, for example, fundraisers, parades, etc. I was laid off in a short amount of time as well as half the station. The station’s rule of thumb was basically, ‘why paid someone to work when we can get an intern to do it for free?’. I had job interviews all over the state as well as the nation and nothing. I had to end up working as a fast food manager and hated every minute of it.

I went back to school where I became a Medical Spa Technician. I now make 6 times the amount of money as I did before be just doing chemical peels, botox injections, microdermabrasion, etc. I also got a medical massage certification in the meantime. It is a lot less stressful doing my current job for more money, than my previous jobs for working at or below minimum wage.

It just takes time and support him in whatever decision he makes, because it is a long tough journey.
