What questions should I ask a journalist who I am interviewing?

Posted on July 24th, 2010 by admin in journalist | 2 Comments »

My assignment for my journalism class is to have two well thought of questions to ask my teacher who is a journalist. I’m just not really sure what to ask him.

We also get extra credit if our questions show research, but I’m not really sure what to research?

Ask him: "If you were interviewing a journalist, what questions would you ask him?"

Perhaps, since he’s a journalist, you could ask him something related to journalism? A good fall back is asking about the relevance of journalism in relation to *x*. Look up a crime that was solved because of media coverage and ask whether he feels on the whole that journalist help solve crimes, or whether they sensationalise them and cause fear in the community unnecessarily. Or ask whether journalists should be allowed more access to war zones/civil unrest areas to draw the world’s attention to them and show the world what is really going on.

Another option is to ask if he thinks print media is dying, as less people buy the paper and more turn on the TV. Is this something to regret or will TV news be a suitable replacement if not an improvement on the old print media?

What is a good interesting book that is about Foreign or international journalist?

Posted on July 21st, 2010 by admin in journalist | 1 Comment »

What is a good interesting book that is about Foreign or international journalist? It doesn’t have to be a biography but it has to deal with international journalism in some form or another.
Journalist has to be a "International Journalist"
A foreign correspondent.

Does the journalist need to be foreign or just the journalism? You might try Live from Baghdad: Making Journalism History Behind the Lines by Robert Wiener. It was made into an HBO film starring Michael Keaton.

Update: Then you might try Geraldine Brooks, a one-time correspondent for the Wall Street Journal, but she is from Australia.

G20 Toronto Black Block get green light to rampage?

A photo Journalist describes his experience following the black block as they rampage through the streets of Toronto during the G20 Summit.

20,000 police and security officials and a $1 billion security budget were not enough to stop 75-100 black block anarchists from smashing windows and torching police cars during a 1.5 hour rampage. The Black Block were able to rampage through the street for 24 blocks until they reached the ‘official protest zone’ where they quickly changed clothes dispersed through the crowd of peaceful protesters and then left the site.

The police were fully aware of the rampage and watched the black block from a distance at a number of locations. It wasn’t until they had dispersed into a crowd of peaceful protesters who thought that they were in a sanctioned area that the police took action beating innocent people with batons and spraying them with pepper spray.

Why was this allowed to happen? Police abandoned police cars at Bay and King when they didn’t need to, why? Was this allowed to happen so the Harper government could justify an outrageous security bill when there was no credible terrorist threat (according to CSIS)? Who led this group of vandals? Were they infiltrated by government paid provocateurs as was the case in Montebello where police with masks and rocks attacked their own riot squad?

How can I remain anonymous while talking to a journalist?

Posted on July 18th, 2010 by admin in journalist | 2 Comments »

If I want to remain anonymous while giving a local journalist information, how do I go about doing it? Do all I have to say is "I want to be off the record?" Can the journalist go ahead and print my name anyway? How can I be sure I will remain anonymous on a news story?

Just tell the journalist you want to be anonymous and do not want your name revealed. If it is an actual journalist and not a dirty tabloid reporter it should be fine. It will really hurt their credibility if they went against your wishes.

What’s a good second language to learn as a prospective journalist?

Posted on July 15th, 2010 by admin in journalist | 5 Comments »

I am pursuing a career in journalism, studying a degree at university of it next year and doing various gap year placements this year. I want to learn a second language, not only as a good experience but to bolster my CV as well. What would be a good choice, especially considering I may be traveling worldwide as a journalist? I’ve always wanted to learn spanish.

I would highly recommend Spanish. I was given the opportunity to live in Veracruz, Mexico for a couple of years and was able to learn Spanish fluently. It’s been a great benefit to me since I’ve returned. Not only do I use it frequently here in the U.S. but Spanish is used all over the world. In fact, Spanish saved my butt a while back when I was (sort of) lost in Germany. You’d think that they only speak German there, but no, Europe is a very multicultural region of the earth. I’ve heard that most Europeans speak more than one language.

If you wanted to learn the mostly commonly spoken language in the world though I believe it’s Mandarine Chinese.

How do you beome a sports journalist?

Posted on July 12th, 2010 by admin in journalist | 1 Comment »

I am a high school student and my goal is to become a sports journalist. I love sports and writing!

You’ve hit on the big part — you have to love the writing first. If you can argue about whether a comma should be in your story or not, it’s a good sign.

Practice writing for your school paper, and study hard in English. Then take a look at colleges that specialize in journalism. You can intern at news outlets and/or work for the school newspaper there. That way, you can see if you like it.

Good luck.
