Heads-Up

Posted on July 27th, 2010 by admin in citizen journalist | 4 Comments »

This September, YouTube will launch its first journalism program. It’s a contest for aspiring reporters to tell stories that often don’t get reported by traditional media, and thus might not otherwise be told.

The first assignment in this contest is to create a video profile of someone you find compelling — someone in your community you think the world should know about.

All videos must be three minutes or less, must be in English, and can only contain content created by you.

We wanted to give you a little bit of a heads-up now, in case you wanted to get an early start.

Stayed tuned for more details on the program, including prizing, how the entries will be judged, which will be announced in a few weeks.

I am an spanish-european citizen, living near to Madrid. I hear frequently to my parents, teachers and some journalists on TV say, when they speak about Philippines, that this country is "a forgotten spanish province in Asia".

What does mean this expression? Explain me it, please.

Our Minister of Information, Communication and Culture himself left bewildered with the seemingly newfangled term ‘Citizen Journalist’.

Hmmm, interesting.

Does anyone know the story behind a canadian citizen who is stranded in Kenya?

Posted on July 21st, 2010 by admin in citizen journalist | 1 Comment »

I have found this article that talks about a desperate women who is trying to prove that is she canadian citizen, but her own government let her down.

Re:Clinton leaves North Korea,

with freed U.S. journalists, Aug. 4

Excellent news. Bill Clinton brings home the two American journalists who were imprisoned in North Korea. Compare that with our Canadian government cancelling the passport of the Canadian woman stranded in Kenya, guaranteeing her a long-term stay away from her Canadian home, her child, her job, her income – her life.

Compare our Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Lawrence Cannon with Bill Clinton and President Barack Obama making every possible effort to get the Americans out of North Korean jails.

A Cannon in the wrong direction and a cannon in the right direction.

Mohammed A. Osman, Willowdale

Talk about personality, credibility and clout. Talk about a nation’s weight being thrown behind two of its citizens. This is the other U.S.A. the world had come to know and look up to. Compare this to the mediocrity we have to offer in terms of personality and our gravitas as a nation. Of course, a nation draws its persona, credibility and clout from its leadership. And, this is our void.

Cyril Abraham, Whitby

The retrieval of the two U.S. reporters in 140 days directly reflects just how poor the efforts of Canada’s Conservatives have been. Canada is a country of all its people, not just the right-wing minority.

George Lenard, Bracebridge

Canadian citizen Suaad Hagi Mohamud is stuck in Kenya awaiting a DNA test to prove her identity because she didn’t bribe a Kenyan border official. Canadian citizen Bashir Makhtal languishes in an Ethiopian jail while the Candian government lets his appeal "run its course." Canadian Abousfian Abdelrazik was trapped in the Sudan until a Canadian court ordered the government to allow him to return.

Does anyone think that if any of these Canadian citizens were white and Christian rather than black and Muslim they would be abandoned by our government? The obvious racism of the Harper regime is creating two classes of Canadian citizens based on colour and religion.

Tim McCaskell, Toronto

I am sorry that Suaad Hagi Mohamud finds herself in a stressful situation. I do not understand how a woman’s face can change significantly over a few weeks. Although the photo is four years old, it is the same one that got her on the plane in Toronto and into Kenya. Unless she underwent facial reconstruction while in Kenya, I fail to see how she no longer resembles her

its good to be concerned. i too feel sorry for her .i’m kenyan.visit canada.com for more.

Should President Obama be credited for the release of Roxana Saberi?

Posted on July 15th, 2010 by admin in citizen journalist | 6 Comments »

You know, the US Citizen journalist who was imprisoned in Iran for being a spy? Do you think that President Obama’s recent overtures to Iran had something to do with Saberi’s release from the Iranian prison?
I raise this question because Ronald Reagan tried to take credit for the release of the Americans in Iran in 1981 after more than a year of being held hostage. In fact, there is strong evidence that George HW Bush used his CIA contacts to convince the Iranians to wait until after the 1980 election to release the hostages because their release would have helped Jimmy Carter get re-elected. How sick is that? Force americans, who were about to be released, to remain captive for another 30 months for purely political reasons. That’s the Republican way. Party before country.
Or how about Bush taking credit for the "rescue" of Jessica Lynch in Iraq, when in fact it was a Iraqi doctor who treated her in Baghdad who essentially walked her out of the hospital.

Well, his new politics toward Iran , definitely played a role in release – they did not want to make an issue of it. Besides , Secretary of state office did officially protested and dismissed accusations of spying.
(She was sentenced and yet released afterward)
