What is a good college/university for photojournalism, and what courses in highschool would I have to take?
I am a grade nine student, thoroughly enjoyed by photojournalism. I was wondering what university/college would be good for persuing this. It doesn’t matter where the school is, as long as it will get me on the top of my game! Thank you.
Art institute of Atlanta is amazing. So much history as well. Take photograph and be on the yearbook team or the school newspaper. Or just show up to events, write and snap, then send your work to local papers and such. Use your imagination.
Newspapers are cutting staff and relying on citizen journalists. What do you think about this?
Newspapers are dying every year from loss of circulation and loss of advertising. So they are using free copy from local citizens. What do you think of this trend?
Bad Idea! Journalist are (allegedly) trained to report without personal predjudice. Many do achieve this.
Using personal film footage has always been done, however when you start relying on the average citizen to report on ‘news’ then I think you are going to get a lot of "unskilled labor" and the results will be ameturish.
Has ideology over-written journalistic ethics in the American mainstream media?
We have a corrupt government (in BOTH parties, for all you partisans), we have corruption in our corporations, and now it appears we have corruption in our media. The media was supposed to be the watchdogs over ALL people in power, but it no longer seems to be the case. It seems their reporting is motivated by ideology instead.
So I ask again, has ideology over-written journalistic ethics in the American mainstream media?
I am saddened to see some slanted and misguided answers here. One should wonder why an overwhelming majority of journalists in the vast majority of the mainstream media outlets are liberal. Could it have anything to do with the fact most of them are OWNED by far left kooks?
And if money making and advertising were the main goal, as some of you have suggested, wouldn’t it behoove them to follow a similar format as say Fox News? They are head and shoulders above every other major network in ratings. Yes they do lean to the right a bit, but do you think the reason they do so well is perhaps because they show BOTH sides on the issues equally? I think that’s attractive to most people looking to actually be informed. You can sit and watch MSNBC and other s like it and agree all day, as they only preach to their choir, but most people wish to be presented the facts from all sides so they can make a more educated decision and opinion.
Its whatever makes them money. And how do they make money? Ad revenues, sales from more people watching. So they need loyal viewership. How do you get loyal viewership. Cater to your target audience and stay with it. NBC don’t go out there and say "we want to promote liberalism." They go out and ask "what can we put on TV that will get high ratings."
Media had became part of giant corporations and lately there have been shift to profit oriented news reporting. This is different from past when they though new programs aren’t supposed to make profits.
Perceived "ideology over-written journalism" is indirect result. Its not something networks shoot for from the beginning.
If intrusion laws were not in place, how do you think it would effect would it effect journalist’s ethics?
Do you think they would be more or less ethical? What might they try to get away with?
what’s an intrusion law?
Do you think the US news media had degraded to tabloid jounalism?
The responsibility of the news it to act as the 4th branch of government, yet I see important stories being squeezed out by OJ simpson and Paris Hilton.
They ALL do it, even CNN. Is anyone else frustrated by this?
Skigod. Thank you for the insight. I really hadn’t thought of it that way.
Absolutely. The advent of all news networks, the internet, the (impending?) death of so many newspapers, and the competition for the (news) consumer’s attention has caused a general decline in the depth of coverage.
You have to get to get the reader/listener/viewer’s attention so quickly you have to get some lurid detail or well-known name out there as quickly as possible.
And thus, we have the sickening details of serial murderers and child molesters to explain to our kids who overhear the 6 o’clock news.
And no one is interested in whether or not our leaders are actually leading us, or misleading us.
What education and training is needed to be a professional golf player?
I am doing a career report and I want to be a golf player for the LPGA. What education is training needed to pursue this career? How many years of education, college you could attend and what type of degree do you earn?
Also, what are average salaries?
Thanks so much!!
Being a "Golf Professional" isn’t necessarily the same as being a "Professional Golfer". Golf Pros generally work within the golf industry as instructors, Golf Course Managers/Director’s of Golf etc. Professional Golfers play the game to make a living. To become a Golf Pro you need at the least to have a diploma in golf management from a community college. These courses teach everything from course maintenance to club repairs to running local tournaments to managing a golf course. To be a Professional Golfer you need the skill to play the game at it’s highest level.
What happened to journalistic integrity in the US?
According to JFK, the greatest purpose of the press is to keep government in check by keeping the public informed, you know, with actual facts concerning issues that are actually important. So what happened to that?
Most seem to have forgotten that and have given way to their own prejudices and beliefs. You will be hard pressed to find any newscaster/journalist who does not let their own bias show in their reporting.

How do journalists avoid common pitfalls when writing press releases?
What are some problems or pitfalls that journalists have to deal with when writing articles? Give examples.
Well, for starters, journalists don’t write press releases. Press releases are written by publicists and given to journalists, who may then re-write them into articles if they are newsworthy.
Probably the biggest pitfall to avoid when re-writing press releases into an article is having a tone that’s too "PR." Companies, governments, and individuals love to describe their accomplishments in glowing terms, but journalists have to be objective. You can’t call something "fantastic," say – it can’t sound like an advertisement.
It is also the responsibility of the journalist to make sure that all of the information provided is correct and accurate, and not depend just on the press release for information.
what is the difference between a photographer and a photo journalist?
what is it that a photo journalist does differently in her career than a "photographer" ? can you give me examples of how a photo journalist would tell a story..where a regular photographer would not. i really want to understand the difference and just what is a photo journalist?
I’m actually kind of shocked at some of these responses.
A photojournalist IS a photographer. There are many many different types of photographers: documentary, commercial, portrait- to name a few.
Photojournalists are similar to documentary photographers in that they tell a story, they educate the viewer in some way or another.
A portrait tells us something about that person. A Photojournalistic image tells us what is going on at that moment. A commercial photograph typically doesn’t educate us or tell us a story. Commercial photographs for advertising and publicity are simply for selling a product and gaining consumer attention. Photojournalists want to show us reality- often times a reality that the general public does not see. For example- take a look at war photos, images of poverty, and images you find in newspapers.
You can think of a photojournalist as a visual writer. Where a writer puts down on paper what is going on, a photographer takes a photograph to show what is going on.
Photojournalists are faced with many issues that other photographers are not. They constantly have to deal with people- people not wanting their picture taken, and they are put into uncomfortable situations. Photojournalists can not be shy. They have to do their job and also respect who and what they are capturing. Sometimes I’m sure they have one of the toughest jobs in the photography business. This is why I chose commercial photography, though it also has difficult issues.
Hope this helps!
