What couses can I take to be in journalism -and- photojournalism?

Posted on March 31st, 2010 by admin in photojournalism | 2 Comments »

I really don’t know much about college courses or anything along those lines, I just know what I want to do. I want to specialize in journalism AND photojournalism. Is that possible? And what courses should I take?

At Marshall University (where I’m a journalism major) it is possible to major in both. Most who want to usually major in journalism and minor in photography. All journalism majors have to take a few photojournalism courses, as well as designing courses.

When you decide to major in journalism, there are a few different types to choose from. Print (newspapers, magazines), broadcast (tv, radio), online (Internet based), public relations and advertising. I’m a print major, so most of my courses involve copy editing, reporting and designing newspapers and magazines.

I hope this helps..

Do you have to be a citizen to become a journalist?

Posted on March 31st, 2010 by admin in citizen journalist | 5 Comments »

You might need to be a citizen if you want work that involves high-level security clearances, such as the journalists that travel with the President on Air Force One. Otherwise, all you need is the legal ability to work in the country, like a Green Card for working in the US.

Have journalistic ethics declined?

Posted on March 31st, 2010 by admin in journalistic ethics | 3 Comments »

Climate change, and the link to human activities, is a well established fact to the great majority of climate scientists. Yet the main-stream media give as much space to climate change deniers as they do to climate scientists, in spite of the lack of credibility of the former.

Does this indicate sloppy journalism, sensational journalism, poor journalism, lowest-common-denominator journalism, or all of the above?
Your answer was a reasonable one Stirling, but you are wrong when you say "There seems to as many experts who don’t believe that it is occurring as there are who do". If you accept that the experts are climatologists rather than geologists and non-scientists, then almost all the experts accept that the climate is changing and is caused by humanity.
WebHelp; Lord Christopher Monckton is not a climate scientist, he is not a scientist at all. He is a very glib climate denier – to me that is not sufficient to make him an ‘expert’. The other names were not familiar to me.

Journalistic standards have certainly declined over the past 20 years, as shown by the dramatically deteriorating quality of TV news programmes and of newspapers. Very few exceptions.

Several things

Deliberate disinformation campaigns, spreading blatantly false statements such as "There seems to as many experts who don’t believe that [global warming] is occurring as there are who do", picked up in all good faith no doubt by people like Sterling

(We know from polls that a strong majority of scientists, and over 90% of those who really are experts on climate, believe that anthropogenic global warming is happening; the number who believe that global warming as such is happening must be even larger)

Journalists with poor scientific background and inadequate resources, who don’t have the time or knowledge to read, say, 1 million words of hacked e-mails and accept what they are told at face value (the BBC, no less, highlighted the words "hide the decline", written in 1999 when there was absolutely no question that temperatures were rising)

Journalism as entertainment. Money that should be spent on investigation going to pay the salaries of anchors or wafflers. Anyone can make good TV out of an argument, however bogus, but making good TV out of complicated science is much more difficult.

The plausibility of specious "tell both sides" propaganda. If this reminds you of the "controversy" over evolution, it should.

I used to give my chemistry classes a lecture on the "hole" in the ozone, and how its cause was identified. At the end, one student came up to me and said "why do I have to know this stuff? I’m a journalism major."

are journalist ethics decling?? why or why not?? name facts and points!!?

Posted on March 31st, 2010 by admin in journalist ethics | 1 Comment »

do journalist only care about getting their point across no matter how they do it?

Journalism and Ethics are a OXYMORON…

REPORTING is a different story. You have to note the difference between JOURNALISM and REPORTING.

Journalists create INFOTAINMENT, REPORTERS report FACTS. Journalists SPIN..they " adjust " FACTS…

How has formal education been influenced by national development?

Posted on March 31st, 2010 by admin in education | 1 Comment »

Our education system has grown and developed in a reflection of the changes in our society in a symbiotic relationship in which one influences the other. Considering such issues as gender, culture, curriculum, testing, and philosophy, how has formal education been influenced by national development? How have changes in society influenced changes in the way in which students are educated, as well as philosophies about education?

I have an Educational blog. I think it might come in useful for the answers you are looking for. Come and comment and let me know what you think! ;)

What journalistic cliché would you like to see disappear?

Posted on March 31st, 2010 by admin in journalistic | 10 Comments »

The one I’d like to see disappear is "hammering out a deal." Whenever any kind of negotiation happens, the two sides are described as "hammering out a deal." Whatever happened to "negotiating" and "have come to an agreement"?

Also, I’d like to see "cautiously optimistic" disappear.

What phrases would you like to see disappear from journalism?

”war on drugs” or calling that a war or anything which is actually police related and is not really a war. ”the criminals are getting through the loopholes in are justice system.” first without it no one would know who the criminals were. also there are more than one type of criminal. the criminals concentrated on are muggers, rapists , and the like. the assumption is that if you are a police officer no crime can be commited as the police are good and criminals are bad. then that these are the only ones to worry about. warfare is not considered a crime or the crimes commited do not worry people as much as street crime . as in it is not considered dangerous and fantasies about killing local baddies as opposed to ending wafare abound. if you are not being invaded wafare is of no concern goes the reasoning. others ”rogue nation”. also using Dictator when referring to an important personage in another country it is crass. for example”the Dictator Kim ILJONG starves his people to maintain an army millions in strength and to maintain a nuclear arsennel.probably dead by now but really. ”Islamo-Fascism ” or Islamist not very informative.similiar to term Red-Fascist used in Cold War. a term which should be changed. term”Death Squads ” used in Iraq wonder if appropriate or if enough known or term just thrown in. term Stalinist when reffering to U.S.S.R. should reffer to it as the U.S.S.R. strange add more initials and a changeof attituide and that is what the U.S. would be. not relevent. the phrase ”Israeli-Palestinian Peace initiative”is contradiction implies there such a thing as Isreali-Palestinians right now there are Isrealis and Palestinians but no Isreali-Palestinians

Why are the journalists complaining about being processed during the Peninsula incident?

Posted on March 31st, 2010 by admin in journalists | 1 Comment »

The cops/soldiers asked the journalists to leave, and they didn’t… When people were being arrested inside the hotel, they got surprised that they were being ‘processed’ as possible instigators in disguise? Isn’t this police/security protocol everywhere in the world?

I think the cops was not able to inform them to leave at the hotel because they where inside and been trap.
they are questioning that they were handcuff by the police and it was illegal to arrest without a warrant.

How much money do Journalist and Broadcast Journalist make?

Posted on March 31st, 2010 by admin in journalist | 1 Comment »

-Journalist that write for magazines
-Broadcast Journalist like the ones the cover media events like award shows or things like that.
-Also if anyone has an idea of how much money radio personalities make. Please share.
Ive looked online but im having a hard time finding the answers. Thanks.

Not sure about magazines though I recently did some salary research in the broadcast TV industry. The only people that make any money on TV are the anchors. Reporters in the field at your local TV station make anywhere from $20-40k, even as a senior journalist.

Check out www.salary.com for salary survey info. I use it all the time, it’s free, no scam there.
